Since inviting guests to stay at our cottage we have achieved 86 five star reviews on Trip Advisor, received lots of positive feedback in our guestbook and have many guests who return year after year, often staying more than once a year.
We love to receive constructive feedback and will try our hardest to use this to consider, review and improve our guest experience. Our main aim is to provide a comfortable, spotlessly clean, and well presented home for you whilst you are away. We have taken time to ensure that the kitchen has all that you would have at home and easy to use appliances (less time reading instructions).
Families are very welcome and we aim to achieve the right balance between a high standard and enabling parents to relax and make happy holiday memories.
We want our guests to feel that they are the first people to stay. So we make sure that we keep things up to date and renew items, whilst also considering the environmental impact of unnecessary waste and landfill.
We all like gifts, so whenever a guest books directly through our own site or over the telephone, they receive a Bath House gift on arrival. Locally produced in Sedbergh.
Parking can be a real issue in Kirkby, but luckily for our guests we have a private parking space, and the use of up to 3 visitors spaces on a first come first serve basis. This means that you can either park your car and simply relax and enjoy the town, or you can explore further afield without the stress of worrying if you will be able to park when you return home after a lovely day out.
So hopefully that gives you a feel for what to expect at the cottage. Now for some ideas of what to do when you are there.
We love to start our day with breakfast out – The Royal Hotel is an excellent choice for the early riser. The are open from 8 am until 10am and you can either have a graze of the buffet table, choose cooked breakfast, and have as much tea, coffee, juices as you like for approximately £15 per head, or you can choose individual items from the menu and pay for what you eat. The surroundings are very relaxing and it is an excellent way to start your holiday. If that’s not your type of place there are many other options which we will cover later in our blog.

Following a relaxing breakfast a stroll around the varied and many independent shops provides a good dose of retail therapy. The beautiful scents in the Bath House being one of our favourites – the staff are so friendly and helpful – and we often have a list of items that friends and family ask us to purchase. Crossing the road to Parma Violet is always a treat – lots of unusual gift ideas, soft furnishings and ladies clothes to browse.
GR & RD Taylor – similar to an Army & Navy store always proves interesting to the guys – lots of gadgets and ideas to peruse.

After browsing the shops we often get provisions to make a packed lunch and gather our walking gear and explore the beautiful area either straight from the door or a short drive away. Without fail every visit we make we walk from the door and take in the beautiful Ruskin’s View – just past the Church Yard. (2019 sees a series of events celebrating the 200th Anniversary of John Ruskin – a leading Victorian art-critic, prominent social thinker and philanthropist. Key events include Ruskin, Turner and the Storm Cloud (12 July- 5 Oct) at Abbott Hall Art Gallery in Kendall, and Treasure from Dust: the geology of John Ruskin (8Aug – 11 Nov) at Brantwood, East of Lake Coniston if you would like to discover more about him). Passing on you can complete a circular walk past Kearstwick and back to the cottage, taking in some outstandingly beautiful landscapes.
Returning to the gorgeous market town, you can either put your feet up back at the cottage with a cuppa, or we often pop across to the Royal Barn (especially in the winter) and relax in front of the fire with a refreshment of some type.
Once the evening arrives you are spoiled for choice if you would like to dine out, but equally eating in at the cottage is also very enjoyable, and with the sunny courtyard rear garden alfresco dining in the summer is a real treat.
